It’s been less than 24 hours since 2013 Topps Inception was released and we are just starting to see some HUGE cards making their way to the secondary market. Based off popular forums BlowOutCards.com and FreedomCardBoard.com there has been a flurry of breakers, both large and small, cracking open this product.

Aside from the amazing cards in this years release, one of the biggest adds to the set is that appears that Topps has corrected the chipping issues, which has marred the previous releases of this product.

Lessons learned are a valuable commodity in the business world.

The Topps Company was riding the heals of one of its most successful promotions, the Bowman Blue Wave Wrapper Redemption. The idea of the promotion was simple. For every 24 hobby packs or 10 jumbo packs you bought, send the wrappers back into Topps in exchange for a pack of special Blue Wave cards.

But here is the catch, the supply is limited, and just because you send in the wrappers doesn’t mean you automatically are going to get some packs. Last year Topps was blasted all over the Internet for the way they handled the program, handing out free packs to their heavy buyers, not treating all of their customers equally, and leaving a lot of people empty-handed and very unhappy – including myself.

This is where we go back to those lesson learned in business. Topps had an entire year to revamp the system and and try to make an effort to ensure that this an equal opportunity for all of their customers to have an equal chance at being included. Instead, it appears as if they have taken to monumental steps backwards.

A number of forum posts outlined that customers were receiving 10 packs, no matter how many packs they had sent in for (usually 5 or less). Once again, handing out additional supply that could have been used to spread the program out and not short change customers.

For me, I’m located in an area that typically gets product on its shelves 1 or 2 days behind everyone else. My wrappers were received by Topps on a Monday (got the product the previous Friday) and they simply could not have gotten there any quicker.

However, here are I am empty handed, another year.

So, let’s revisit those lessons learned again. I believe that all lessons are two way streets. My lesson learned is that Topps truly does not care about it’s customers. Big or small. They simply want to try and turnover products, releases, and promotions as quick as possible.

For this, I am choosing to no longer support them by no longer purchasing their wax products. To Topps, losing my business will never truly be felt on their bottom line. They have already proven that my value as a customer isn’t anything they wish to keep, so the real impact is going to come at my local Hobby Shop – and the others who represent the Topps Company.

I am hoping that others start to follow suit and Topps starts to realize that they are also in the customer satisfaction business.

A business that they are failing miserably in.

#27 Nolan Arenado 3B Colorado Rockies

Arenado was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the second round of the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft out of El Toro High School in Lake Forest, California. He ranked number two among Rockies prospects by MLB.com entering the 2013 season.

In 2012, Arenado batted .285 for AA Tulsa with 36 doubles and 12 homers. In 2011, Arenado led all Minor Leaguers with 122 RBIs, setting a record for Rockies farmhands.

Look for Arenado to be called up to Colorado sometime during the 2013 season.

#28 Bubba Starling, OF Kansas City Royals

Tough not to love an athlete with the name of Bubba, isn’t it?

Bubba was a two-sport athlete in high school in Kansas. Things were looking bright for Starling as he had verbally committed to play football at the University of Nebraska. Things seem to be working out great. The problem for Bubba was that he was also a standout athlete in baseball. In the 2011 MLB Draft, the Kansas City Royals selected him 5th overall and gave him a signing bonus of $7.5 million, making it easy for him to drop his hopes of college football.

While he is a very raw prospect, some of his tools are starting to take shape. Last year, Bubba batted .25 with 10 HR and 33 RBI in 53 games for the Rookie-League Burlington Royals.

With his football pedigree, Bubba showcases a big arm while paroling the outfield. Along with his enormous size (6’4″ – 190 lbs), Bubba has great speed (stole 10 bases last year).

#29 Javier Baez, SS Chicago Cubs

It has already been decided that Javier Baez will not break camp as part of the major league roster. But Baez has made some unforgettable impressions so far in camp.

At only 20 years old, Baez looks like a veteran on the field with sharp fielding skills, fantastic range, and great power. A premium position player with above average power is a hot commodity in the bigs these days, so I have to imagine its only a matter of time before we see him in Chicago.

Because he is blocked at his natural position by the Cubs’ All-Star SS Starlin Castro, Baez will probably be asked to switch positions. This could be why Baez will start the season in the minors, to get more comfortable at 2B/3B.

Last year Baez batted .294 in 80 between the Florida State League and Midwest League. he also produced 16 HR and 46 RBI with an 69:14 K:BB ratio.

#30 Kolten Wong, 2B St. Louis Cardinals

Viewed by many as the team’s future at second base, this Hawaiian native has been making a splash on the mainland for sometime.

Drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 16th round of the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft, Wong chose not to sign, opting to attend the University of Hawaii, where he played college baseball for the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors. Wong was named a Baseball America All-American in 2011. The Cardinals selected Wong in the first round, 22nd overall, of the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft.

In 2012, Wong played for the Double-A Springfield Cardinals in 2012, batting .287 with 52 RBIs and 21 stolen bases. He was also named to the 2012 All-Star Futures Game.

Wong has made some waves with his performance in camp this year, hoping to earn a spot on the roster at the start of the season. One thing we know, is that Wong has an amazing glove and great plate discipline, which are two very good things to have at the MLB level.

We are looking forward to seeing him in St. Louis.

With each years release of the product, Panini strives to make the set more interesting and collectible. They have a tradition of creating short-print variations of players that typically sell for obscene amounts of cash, and recently they have started to add variations for each card in the set.

It appears that Panini has made it easier this year to identify the photo variations of players they have slipped in 2012 Playoff Contenders Football. On the reverse side of the card, you will find that variation versions are missing the players details in the box that surrounds the team logo in the lower right side of the card.

These variation photos were posted on their blog earlier this week, and you can see the different photos on the front, along with the differences on the rear of the cards.

Yesterday, Panini announced an interesting tidbit regarding their upcoming 2012 Panini Prizm Football release. In addition to the base 100 rookies in the set, there are 25 players who appear on hobby-exclusive, photo-variation RCs that fall one per box on average.
