Panini Next Day Autograph stamps ruin highly anticipated rookie cards

Each year one of the most highly collected and sought after basketball rookie autographed cards are the Panini Next Day Autographs. When these cards first released, Panini had been giving each card serial numbers and limiting production to around 100 copies. Over the past few years, Panini had stopped applying serial numbers and left the production a mystery to everyone. There had been a number of claims of counterfeit versions of some of the more popular rookies being made with forged autographs.

In order to circumvent that, it appears that Panini has decided to stamp each Next Day card this year with a Next Day Autograph logo. Great idea in concept, except when executed like this:

s-l1600

For those of you unfamiliar with the Next Day Autographs from Panini and some of the coin that they bring in, here are is a small glimpse into their lure and value for collectors.

These are just a few of the examples of recent sales from the last 90 days. Some superstars like Steph Curry, John Wall and James Harden also have Next Day Autos that regularly sell for hundreds and thousands of dollars.

While having the embossed stamp on each card can help thwart some potential issues with creating counterfeit cards, when done poorly, it can also dramatically decrease the value and appeal of a card. I am sure that this is not something that Panini takes into considering during the production of a product, however, with all of their recent mishaps and issues with quality control and over production, items like this should be on their short-list of things to avoid in the future.

Top 5 Undervalued Baseball Cards – May 2019 Edition

We are going to be rolling out a new monthly section that takes a look cards that we believe are currently undervalued and primed to make a jump in value over the next few months. Our plan will be to revisit these posts from time-to-time, as well as provide our readers some ideas on the best time to start unloading their cards.

What you aren’t going to find in these posts are us telling you to go out and buy a 2009 Bowman Chrome Draft Mike Trout Auto or a 2016 Bowman Chrome Vladimir Guerrero Auto were these cards have already seen a significant price jump and has much larger barriers to entry for the average collector.

I’m hoping to keep most of the suggestions for cards to buy below $5 each, in hopes that our picks can help you easily double (if not more) your money once you decide to sell.

Here are our suggestions for May 2019:

2013 Topps Update Marcell Ozuna RC #US279

You can find the 2013 Topps Update Marcell Ozuna RC #279 for around $2-$3 each right now. Flagship Topps rookie cards have started to climb in overall price and collectibility recently. That mixed with Ozuna’s electric bat and solid fan base are a great mix to see this card climb closer to $6-$8 in the very near future.

2017 Topps Series 2 Hunter Dozier RC #493

Dozier has been flying under the radar to start the 2019 season, and is quietly putting up great numbers batting in the heart of a very good Royals line-up. With these cards sitting under $1 each, you should be able find some in the bargain basement of eBay, your LCS, or other spots. With a solid first-half of the season and some All-Star exposure, they cards have a chance to blow-up.

2017 Topps Update Luis Castillo RC #US139

Being the ace of any team is never a bad title to hold, even if it is the Cincinnati Reds. Castillo has burst into the young 2019 season mowing down batters and keeping runs off the board. It’s not going to take long before people start mentioning his name in early season ballots for Cy Young. Expect to see this cards jump past their current $1-ish mark very soon.

2013 Topps Series 2 Kris Davis RC #360

The hobby loves the long-ball, and Khris Davis loves to hit the the long-ball. So, this seems like a match made in heaven. Hitting 40+ HR in each of the last three years, Davis is on pace to hit 50 this season. A big month with lots of tape-measure-worth homers can send his prices into a frenzy. Expect to see these climb from $2-$3 to around $4-$6 if he is able to keep up his current pace.

2018 Topps Series 1 Victor Robles RC #166

After a disappointing and injury filled 2018 season, Robles has bounced back and found himself in the middle of a great start to the 2019 season. His 2018 Topps Series 1 RC is currently selling for under $1 and as the early favorite for NL Rookie of the Year, these cards have lots of room to climb.

Tiger Woods is BACK!

That’s right folks, you read that correct – Tiger Woods is back – finishing the first round of the Hero World Challenge with a five-birdie 69 in his much-anticipated return to competitive professional golf.

His great start to the weekend will undoubtedly have a major impact on his sports cards. His iconic 2001 Upper Deck SP Authentic Rookies have held steady in price during the last few years as Tiger has fallen out of the ranks on tour.

If Thursday’s opening round plays any indication on how well Tiger has been feeling since his spinal fusion surgery in April, I think we are all in for some very favorable results and quite a few of his signature first-pumps.

The time to stock up on his rookie cards and licensed autographs is right now, as I can only imagine how crazy prices are going to get if Tiger is able to claw his way back to the top or even win a major during 2018 and beyond.

Back in 2009 and 2010 during the height of Tigers career, his rookie card prices were off the charts, some selling for over $10,000. The prices have certainly calmed down since then, but we certainly are on the brink of seeing a resurgence in Tiger, which very well could mean a resurgence in his prices.

What Are My Sports Cards Worth? The Best Online Resources for Finding the Value of Your Cards.

For years Beckett has been the authority for sports card related prices. Their monthly publication was the gold standard for collectors who were looking for information about what their sports cards are worth. In today’s digital era, monthly publications are outdated the minute they are printed. The secondary card market moves at a per-second basis. Single game performances by players have dramatic impacts on the values of players cards. With a majority of collectors moving to eBay to buy and sell their cards, the data that eBay has from sales history provides collectors with a much clearer and accurate snap shot at the current market values of their cards. However, navigating the historical and completed auctions on eBay can be tricky.

Here are a few our favorite free resources online that give you some pretty detailed information about the current value and trends as it relates to your sports cards.

sortsof.com

A few years ago eBay decided to remove the best offer sales pricing information from their website, but sortsof.com helps you see those best offer prices and final auction prices for all auctions. Unlike all other tools, sortsof.com smart design allows for you to search for multiple at items simultaneously so that you can compare and contrast the prices of multiple items at once. The site will remember your search queries so the next time you visit the site from the same computer, you can just pick-up where you left out. Best of all, no registration is required.

worthster.com

Another gap that eBay has on their website is that they currently only elect to have an email or push notification sent to you when a new item matching your search terms is listed. worthster.com has taken that concept and reversed it. Allowing you to add search terms to your dashboard and they will send you a nightly email with all of the sales that occurred that day. Your dashboard also gives you access to a historical graph of sales data, giving you some early indicators around when the best time to buy or sell a particular card may be. You are required to register with this website, since they need your email address to send you your nightly email summary of sales data.

Tips on search terms

Both of these sites rely on using eBay search terms to help you find your cards values. Here are a few tips to help you understand how to use better search terms to narrow in and the most accurate pricing information that you can. If you are interested in knowing what your 1986-87 Fleer Michael Jordan Rookie is worth, you may get hundreds or thousands of results. Try using some keyword operators to filter out unwanted search results. By removing some keywords like -psa -bgs -sticker -set -reprint -pack -sgc you can start to narrow in your specific card and getting yourself better pricing information. Also, by adding in some more specific keywords like BGS 9.5, PSA 10 you can alter your search results and narrow on specific versions of your card if it has a serial number, autograph, BGS or PSA grade or any other unique characteristics.

Understanding the year, manufacturer, set, player and card characteristics will help you create the most ideal search strings to find your exact card values.

Comprehensive Look at Top Rafael Devers Rookie and Prospect Cards

The Boston Red Sox have called up third base prospect Rafael Devers causing quite the buzz in the collecting community. Since his Major League Baseball debut will be occurring so late in the 2017 season, you can expect to find his rookie cards in all 2018 products.

Until then, let’s take a look at some of key Prospect cards that already available.

2014 Bowman Chrome Draft Rafael Devers Top Prospects #CTP-37

2014 bowman chrome draft rafael devers

Collectors first found Devers in 2014 Bowman Chrome Draft as part of the Top Prospects subset. This card was available in both a paper base and the much more desirable Chrome version. Along with each of those versions, as typical with most Bowman releases, the card was available in a number of various parallels.

2015 Bowman Chrome Rafael Devers Prospect Autograph #BCAP-RD

2015 bowman chrome rafael devers auto

While collectors had to wait for Devers to have his first Bowman Chrome Auto, the wait was rather short as he showed up in 2015 Bowman baseball. A set that had numerous quality control issues, you can expect to find BGS 9.5 and PSA 10 copies to command a premium. These Bowman Chrome Autos are available in the typical rainbow of parallel colors.

2015 Panini Elite Extra Edition Rafael Devers Prospects Auto #194

2015 elite rafael devers auto

The Elite Extra Edition Prospect Auto offers collectors a much cheaper alternative to the Bowman Chrome counterpart. Unlike the Bowman Chrome Auto, this card features a sticker autograph which really takes away from the overall appeal of the card. While Elite Extra Edition is the flagship product from Panini for prospectors, the set has fallen off over the past few years. Similar to the Bowman version, this card also features a number of Status version parallels.

2015 Panini Contenders Rafael Devers Prospect Ticket Auto #32

2015 contenders rafael devers auto

The most affordable of all of Devers 2015 issued autos is his 2015 Panini Contenders Prospect Ticket Auto. Like the Elite Extra Edition version, this card features a sticker auto and has a number of parallels.

The mystery and the hype surrounding the 2017 Bowman Mega Box

In late April when 2017 Bowman hit the streets there was little publicity around the retail-only Target-exclusive Mega Box that was slated to be released. Topps had been issuing retail-only mega boxes with some previous releases, namely Topps Update. Typically, in those release, these boxes contained five base packs along with two exclusive chrome packs.

In 2017 Bowman Mega Boxes, each box contained two base 2017 Bowman packs along with two Mega Box exclusive packs. These packs contain four Mega Box (Mojo) refractors and one Mega Box insert refractor. These refractors came in four parallels: Purple (serial numbered to 250), Green (serial numbered to 99), Orange (serial numbered to 25) and Black (serial numbered to 1).

Shohei Otani

Perhaps the most interesting inclusion in the 2017 Bowman Mega Boxes was a card that was not available in regular release of 2017 Bowman: Shohei Otani. If you are not familiar with Otani, who has been drawing comparisons to Babe Ruth, is a Japanese player who posted a 1.86 ERA along with a 10-4 record, while batting .322 with 22 HR and 67 RBI last season.

Not only is the inclusion of Otani in the product a mystery, since he was not included in the regular release, but how he was included in the product, as Topps does not have a license to include him in any products. Topps owns licensing rights for a players on Major League Baseball 40-man rosters and players who were on the roster for the World Baseball Classic. Otani was originally on the Japan roster for the WBC, but was scratched and replaced due to an injury.

Shortly after the Mega Boxes started to appear on shelves at Target, collectors started to notice they were becoming increasingly difficult to find. Rumors and speculation have been swirling on message boards that the product was pulled off the shelf by Topps due to the legal issues surrounding Otani being included in the product without licensing.

Short Supply

This has resulted in the product being in very short supply, and like with most every other Bowman Chrome product, in very high demand among the collecting community. All of this added with the inclusion of Otani’s first English card has caused a price explosion on the secondary market. Almost a perfect storm for collectors and flippers: Short Supply + High Demand. Based on the odds with in the packs, Topps created around 150,000 packs or 75,000 Mega Boxes using the math that 100 cards in the set, Purple Refractors are numbered to 250 are seeded 1:6 packs (100 x 250 x 6). Rumors have said that Topps is currently sitting on 25,000 to 40,000 boxes in their warehouses. Meaning that we have only seen around 33% to 50% of the product opened, which has helped fuel the short supply perception.

Secondary Market

The first BGS 10 Pristine Black Label sold for $1,600 on eBay. While BGS 9.5 and PSA 10 versions are becoming more affordable as more are being listed on eBay, this card has the potential to be a landmark card if and when Otani makes the move to the states and Major League Baseball. Along with the Otani singles, the prices of the sealed boxes have skyrocketed in price. With a MSRP of $14.99, boxes can be found on the secondary market for around $130 each.

Topps has been relatively quiet on the entire issue or if this product will be released again. In the event that they product is ever re-released, the secondary market prices on this product would definitely tank. Until then, ride the wave.

Appreciating the 2015-16 Upper Deck Young Guns Foil Set
Appreciating the 2015-16 Upper Deck Young Guns Foil Set

Earlier this year, Upper Deck released an industry first with their e-Pack program. This program gives card collectors and enthusiasts the ability to buy packs of cards online and trade those card with other users. All cards, except base cards, are able to be either transferred to a COMC account or directly mailed to the user.

As part of the program, Upper Deck added a few chase cards into the mix. By collecting 10 base cards or 5 Young Guns, you could combine the cards into an exclusive foil version of the card. These foil cards are only available through e-Pack and are not available through hobby or retail backs. These cards have fallen under mixed reviews from collectors due to the nature of obtaining the cards.

I believe that these cards are stunning in person and have a very high level of collectibility and I also believe that down the road, these cards will become very scarce and difficult to obtain. Since Upper Deck has stopped selling 2015-16 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey, I have started to notice a diminished amount of these foil cards appearing on eBay and other trading card outlets. Series 2, while much less appealing that Series 1, has slowing started to have some of the set start to pop-up on the secondary markets.

A few of these sets have started to filter out on to eBay:

I suspect to see less and less of these sets become available as the Series 1 product has been drying up and most people have started to cash out their accounts. I fully expect that these cards will become the must-own cards for the top rookies in the class and the ability to find and locate them will become increasingly more difficult over the years.

As a collector, I have started to stash away these cards and will be waiting to post a follow-up to this story in a few years once the market has realized the true appeal and desire of these cards.
